Area Girls Take Inspiring Day Trip To Minnesota History Center

On May 7th, a group of enthusiastic students boarded a charter bus bright and early for a one-day trip to the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul, where they had the opportunity to visit the exhibit, "Girlhood (It’s Complicated)," on loan from the Smithsonian Institution. The exhibit showcased the ever-evolving concept of girlhood in the United States and how young women have influenced politics, education, work, health, and fashion.

The trip brought together 43 – 5th and 8th grade girls, the majority attending from Clearbrook-Gonvick and Win-E-Mac Schools, with a few from Fosston. They were accompanied by four teachers from the participating schools and the director of the Firefly Center for Art & Wellbeing.

In addition to the Girlhood exhibit, students had the opportunity to explore the History Center’s permanent displays—including exhibits on Minnesota’s dramatic weather patterns and the rich cultural and historical heritage of the state. Interactive features and hands-on activities helped bring the material to life, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.

Upon arrival, the group gathered for a catered Italian lunch served right at the museum—a welcome chance to connect, relax, and recharge before diving into the day’s exhibits.

The trip was made possible thanks to a grant from the Northwest Minnesota Foundation’s Women’s Fund, with additional support from Gustafson & Goudge, First National Bank of McIntosh, and The Northern State Bank of Gonvick. Thanks to Bemidji Bus Lines for a safe trip!

The Firefly Center extends its heartfelt thanks to the sponsors, school staff, and families who helped make this meaningful day of learning and connection possible.
